Professional dental cleanings are important for maintaining great oral health. However, it is vital that you continue good dental hygiene at home as well.
Dr. Karandisecky recommends that you brush your teeth at least twice per day and floss daily. This helps prevent tooth decay, periodontal disease, and other oral health issues.
Recent studies have indicated that certain tools are especially effective at keeping teeth clean and healthy. Due to this Dr. Karandisecky advises that you invest in an electric toothbrush, which can gently and efficiently clean each tooth. These can be particularly beneficial for patients with arthritis and other conditions that make brushing difficult. With an electric toothbrush, you simply hold the brush against each tooth in turn, letting it do the work for you.
Water-based interdental cleaners, such as a Waterpik, are also easy to use and highly effective at keeping your mouth clean and healthy. Dr. Karandisecky recommends these to all our patients, as well. We invite you to ask your hygienist for information on how to effectively clean between your teeth.
There are additional ways to help keep teeth strong and healthy. Toothpastes and mouth rinses with fluoride are available over-the-counter. Eating a balanced diet and limiting sugary snacks can also contribute to good oral health.
When you can, drink a glass of water after meals. This can help wash away sugars from foods and drinks. Choose tap water, rather than bottled water. Most tap water contains added fluoride, which helps to strengthen tooth enamel. Bottled water generally contains no fluoride. If something you eat or drink contains acids, such as sodas or candies, wait 30 minutes before brushing. This will allow your saliva time to neutralize the acids and protect your teeth.
